Panda Internet Security 2010 Review
The interface is simple yet effective. Each of the program’s modules is listed on the left, under the Protection column. You can click on one to access settings, or click Settings at the bottom of that column. The second column, Maintenance, is for making basic automated backups. The third is Updates. Along the top is a series of five folders: Status (the home folder, containing all the information listed above), Scan, Report (for viewing event reports and a few simple statistics), Quarantine, and Services. This last folder includes a suggestion box, rescue discs, Panda bulletins, and e-mail technical support. There are also links on the right to Web-based tech support and current security info, including the latest threats and their threat levels.
Another improvement is the inclusion of a USB protection system. First, it disables autorun admittedly, a fairly easy thing to do without any security software, and a good move, considering how smoothly malware can be executed as soon as a removable disk is mounted. But there are ways to still activate autorun without user involvement, so Panda Internet Security 2010 provides a new AUTORUN.INF file for USB drives that can’t be read, deleted, or modified.
Panda Internet Security 2010 has also provided a number of new generic signatures and implemented additional anti-rootkit techniques. Anti-phishing heuristics have been updated, and scanning both Web pages and downloads is significantly faster. All of this makes Panda Internet Security 2010 one of the very few pieces of software we’ve reviewed that we can recommend as an upgrade despite a lack of new, obvious features.
We were less pleased with Panda Internet Security 2010’s Background Scan, which operates during idle CPU cycles. This can be set to disinfect/quarantine, delete, or block access to files, but not to ask what you want to do about something it has found. We were surprised when a popup informed us in the middle of our workday that one program we like to have present in these trials—Game Accelerator, because it’s a keylogger look-alike—had its access blocked. We would have preferred Panda Internet Security 2010 have asked before blocking it.
Here are some Screenshots
- Panda Internet Security 2010’s status screen, anchored by the Protection, Maintenance, and Updates columns.
- With Panda, you can customize and create your own Web-content filter.
- Quarantine holds suspicious files, letting you delete them, approve them, or send them to Panda for analysis.

This seems redundant; as though Panda couldn't decide which navigation system would work best.
